Battle Pass: Revolution I

Join us for the opening reception of Battle Pass, an interdisciplinary homage to the Revolutionary Battle of Brooklyn. Revolution I includes a collaborative installation (on view through March 31), and a reception workshop and performance. These events will take place at GRIDSPACE, a Crown Heights art space, located at 112 Rogers Avenue/corner of Sterling.
Mapping Migration: A Workshop

Where does a journey begin? And how do we know where it ends? Join Dr. Debra Tillinger in an exploration of the art of mapping, from the times of ancient seafarers to the present day. This workshop will focus on the famous longitude problem, a riddle of the 18th century whose solutions included magic and mathematics. We will explore ideas in mapping from Lewis Carrol, Umberto Eco, and other artists and thinkers. [continue reading…]
The Wayfarers: Films on Solitary Migration

Join us for The Wayfarers, an evening of films that will take you places. Filmmakers Bill Brown (who will join us for discussion after the films are aired), Vanessa Renwick, and Kevin Gallagher each undertook solo journeys across vast distances within the United States. Music Migration: Films of Iran

Join us for an evening of film about forced relocation of populations in Iran and its impact on the music of the region. George Murer, CUNY PhD Student in ethnomusicology, presents footage he has recorded and collected on the music of Khorasanian Kurds, whose ancestors were relocated to Iran’s Northeastern frontier by a succession of Persian shahs. Next, we will air the documentary Afro-Iranian Lives, by Behnaz Mirzai, exploring the world, rich in music and ritual, of Iranians descended from African slaves. [continue reading…]

Boyce will discuss her book, its images and local history from the arrival of the Dutch West India Company to the present day. She will be joined by Chris Matias, founder and director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, who will discuss the continuing presence of native americans in the Gowanus area.
