Where does a journey begin? And how do we know where it ends? Join Dr. Debra Tillinger in an exploration of the art of mapping, from the times of ancient seafarers to the present day. This workshop will focus on the famous longitude problem, a riddle of the 18th century whose solutions included magic and mathematics. We will explore ideas in mapping from Lewis Carrol, Umberto Eco, and other artists and thinkers.
Debra Tillinger holds a doctorate in ocean and climate physics from Columbia University. As a scientist, she has traveled the world by ship, which only increased her childhood fascination with maps. She is currently an adjunct professor of biology and geology at Touro College and is a performer and choreographer of tribal fusion bellydance. She is working on her first book.
