Introduction

Since opening its alley doors in 2005, Proteus’ exhibitions of art, artifacts and books as well as our many events have been organized around a yearlong theme. The themes, selected for their resonance and capacity to encompass multiple interpretations and approaches, “rise to the surface” through ongoing conversations between Proteus’ Core Collaborators, our extended community of PG Correspondents and visitors to the gallery, both artists and workers in other disciplines.

By extending the theme over the course of a year, time is provided for reaction, inspiration and the production of new work by artists and others visiting the space, creating a community-based exchange often leading to delightfully unanticipated outcomes. Proteus welcomes community engagement in the process of developing art, projects and events.

To date, the themes explored in our Proteus Room include: Travel, Library, Play, Mend, Transport and Paradise. Our theme for 2011/12, from September through July, is Migration. Next year’s theme, from September 2012 through July 2013, is BATTLE. The first Battle exhibition was “War of Words”. The second show was “Secret Wars”; and the final show is “Battle Ground”.

Next year’s theme, from September, 2013 through June, 2014 will be WATER.
